John Shockley with his students in Straughn, Indiana, 1893. His son Ernest stands with hands in pocket in the lower left corner, and his daughter Elsie is directly behind her brother. She claimed never to have had so good a teacher as her father, who brought even geography to life. His passion for maps was passed along eventually to Ross Lockridge, Jr.
